Soon’s art is very much influenced by the aesthetics of Chinese painting. His intention is to express Chinese art philosophy in the medium of oil to reflect his Chinese cultural background. His lotus paintings exude a sensual and serene feel that echoes a state of mind, dream-like at times.
The artist new mountain series was unveil at ArtSingapore 2010 They exude a rawness that exalt the power of nature and glorify the scale and magnificence of the mountains. In the rendering of the mountain works, Soon favours a broad effect, eschewing the narrative details by laying strong, broad strokes over a background smirred with thinned washes of saturated colours to emphasize the vastness and spiritual power of mother nature. Lumps of heavy impastos bears down on the viewer with its physicality, extolling the materiality of paint.
Throughout the past eleven years, Soon has created many successful series on his lotuses, namely: Sensuous Oriental Lotus, Garden of Paradise, Spring Lotus and My Lotus Garden.
